Patio Roof Contractors Pflugerville
Patio roof contractors Pflugerville homeowners call tend to fall into two camps: builders who frame a good structure and roof it as an afterthought, and roofers who roof well but do not frame. Patio roofs almost always leak where those two jobs meet — at the house. This page is about hiring so that joint has an owner.

The short version
A patio roof is two jobs: a structure and a roof. Whoever you hire, the quote should name who flashes the joint at the house and who answers if it leaks. The patio roof’s pitch decides whether it can carry shingles that match the house or needs metal or membrane. And an attached patio cover generally needs a permit and, in most Pflugerville subdivisions, HOA approval before anything is framed.
Four kinds of contractor build patio roofs
Each one is good at part of the job. The useful question is not which is best, but which part each one is likely to treat as somebody else’s problem.
| Contractor | Strongest at | Where it goes wrong | Ask them |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patio or pergola builder | Posts, beams, footings and a good-looking structure | Roofing treated as a finish layer, and the house joint sealed with caulk instead of flashed | “Who flashes the joint at the house, and how?” |
| Roofer | Roofing, underlayment, flashing and the tie-in to the existing roof | Many roofers do not frame, so the structure has to come from someone else | “Do you frame it, or roof it after someone else does?” |
| General contractor or remodeler | Running the whole project, permits and trades included | The roof is subcontracted, and you may never meet the person doing it | “Who is the roofing sub, and can I see their insurance?” |
| Handyman | Small repairs and finish work | Structural spans, permits and roof tie-ins are outside a typical handyman scope | “Will this be permitted?” |
The arrangement that tends to work
One contractor responsible for the whole patio roof, or two who agree in writing where one job ends and the other begins. What fails is the handover nobody wrote down: the builder assumes the roofer will flash the wall, the roofer was only asked to roof the panels, and the first hard rain finds the gap. Whoever you hire, the usual verification still applies — insurance certificates sent by the insurer, a real address — and it is covered on licensed roofing experts Pflugerville TX.
Three ways a patio roof can meet the house
This one choice decides how the patio roof looks from the street, what roofing it can carry, and where it is most likely to leak.
| Type | What it is | Pitch it allows | Where it leaks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tied into the roof | A gable or hip that extends the main roof over the patio, framed into the existing rafters | Can match the house, so shingles can match too | The valleys and the cut into the existing roof |
| Attached shed roof | A single slope fixed to the house wall or under the eave, falling away from the house | Usually low, limited by the eave or wall height | The ledger board and the wall flashing above it |
| Freestanding | Its own posts on all sides, not attached to the house | Whatever the design calls for | Rarely at the house, because it does not touch it — but it leaves a gap where rain gets through |
Most Pflugerville patio covers are the attached shed type, because it is simplest to build under a single-story eave. It is also the type that most often ends up too flat for shingles.
Why your patio roof may not match the house
Homeowners often want the patio roof shingled to match. Whether that is possible depends on one number: how many inches the roof falls in every twelve.
Shingles, matched to the house
At a normal residential pitch, the patio roof can carry the same shingle as the main roof, installed the same way. Usually only possible on a tied-in gable or hip.
Shingles, with extra underlayment
Building codes generally allow asphalt shingles down to 2 in 12, but between 2 and 4 they require additional underlayment because water moves off them more slowly. Done properly it works. Done like a normal-pitch roof, it leaks in wind-driven rain.
No shingles. Metal or membrane.
Below 2 in 12, shingles are generally not permitted at all. Metal panels work down to the minimum pitch the manufacturer publishes for that specific panel; below that, a membrane is the right roof. Our flat roof installation Pflugerville TX page covers how a low-slope roof should be built and drained.
Metal over a patio: two things to know
It is louder. An exposed metal roof with no ceiling beneath it is noticeably noisy in a hard Central Texas downpour. A finished ceiling, solid decking or insulation under the panels changes that considerably.
It gets hot underneath. Bare metal radiates afternoon heat down onto the patio. A light colour and something between the panels and the people — a ceiling or insulation — make the space usable in July. Panel types are compared on our metal roofing Pflugerville TX page.
Where patio roofs actually leak
The patio roof itself is rarely the problem. The water gets in where it meets the house, and it usually shows up inside the wall rather than on the patio.
The ledger board
An attached patio roof hangs off a board bolted to the house wall. If there is no flashing above that board, water running down the wall gets behind it and into the house framing. It can rot for years before a stain appears indoors.
Wall and step flashing
Where the patio roof runs along a wall, metal flashing has to be woven into the roofing and tucked under the siding or counter-flashed into masonry. A bead of sealant along that line is not flashing, and it will not outlast a few summers.
The tie-in valley
On a patio roof framed into the main roof, the new roof meets the old one in a valley. That valley carries water from both, and it has to be underlaid and lapped into the existing shingles, not laid on top of them.
Where the water lands
A patio roof sheds water somewhere. Without a gutter it lands on the patio slab and often runs back toward the foundation — on Central Texas clay, a bigger problem than anything on the roof.
Permits, the HOA and the structure
The permit
An attached patio cover generally needs a building permit in Pflugerville, as in most Central Texas cities. Ask who is pulling it. A contractor who suggests skipping it is also skipping the inspection that would have caught a missing ledger flashing or an undersized beam.
The HOA
Most Pflugerville subdivisions have an HOA, and many review patio covers for size, setback, materials and colour. Approval usually comes before the permit and before anyone orders materials.
The structure
Post sizes, beam spans and footings depend on the size of the cover and the load it carries. Longer spans may call for engineered beams or an engineer’s sign-off. A roofer can tell you whether a structure is ready to roof; whether it is sized correctly is a framing and engineering question.
Three lines that should worry you on a patio roof quote
Shingles quoted on a pitch below 2 in 12, or between 2 and 4 with no mention of extra underlayment.
“Tie into existing roof” with nothing else written — no flashing, no valley underlayment, no mention of who touches the existing shingles.
No gutter, and no answer to where the water goes.
What we do on a patio roof
We are roofers. On a patio cover that means the roofing itself — shingle, metal or membrane, chosen to suit the pitch — and the part most often left without an owner: the flashing and tie-in where the patio roof meets the house and the existing roof. If the structure is already framed, or is being framed by your builder, we can roof it and own that joint.
We also look at patio roofs that already leak. The entry point is almost always at the house rather than above the drip, which is why our roof inspection Pflugerville TX visit traces it from the wall and the attic, with a written photo report you keep. For a full new roof on the house at the same time, see roof installation Pflugerville TX — doing both together avoids tying a new patio roof into an old main roof.
Patio roof questions, answered
Should I hire a roofer or a patio builder for a patio roof?
Often both, with one of them clearly responsible for the joint where the patio roof meets the house. Patio builders are strongest on the structure; roofers are strongest on the roofing and flashing. What matters is that the quote names who flashes the tie-in and who answers if it leaks.
Can a patio roof match my house shingles?
Only if the patio roof has enough pitch. Building codes generally do not allow asphalt shingles below 2 in 12, and between 2 and 4 in 12 they need extra underlayment. Many attached patio roofs are flatter than that, which is why they are often metal or membrane even when the house is shingled.
Do I need a permit for a patio cover in Pflugerville?
An attached patio cover generally needs a building permit in Pflugerville, as in most Central Texas cities, and many subdivisions also require HOA approval first. Confirm the specifics for your address with the City of Pflugerville and your HOA before work is scheduled.
Why does my patio cover leak where it meets the house?
Because that joint is where two trades meet and often where nobody owned the flashing. Common causes are a ledger board fastened to the wall with no flashing above it, missing step or kick-out flashing, or a tie-in valley built without proper underlayment.
Will tying a patio roof into my roof affect my roof warranty?
It can. Manufacturer and workmanship warranties often exclude damage caused by later alterations, so cutting into an existing roof for a tie-in is best done, or at least reviewed, by a roofer. Read the terms on your warranty certificate before the work starts; our warranty information page explains the difference between the two kinds.
Is a metal patio roof loud in the rain?
An exposed metal roof with no ceiling under it is noticeably louder in heavy rain than a shingled one. A finished ceiling, solid decking or insulation below the panels reduces it considerably.

ESTIMATES: any figure discussed is for budgeting rather than quotation; a firm price requires someone on site, because size, pitch, how the roof meets the house, the existing roof and the material all move it. CODES AND PERMITS: pitch and underlayment requirements referenced here are general; the adopted code, the City of Pflugerville building department and your HOA govern your specific project, and permit and HOA approval are the property owner’s responsibility to confirm. Structural sizing of posts, beams and footings is a framing and engineering matter, not a roofing one. Product minimum slopes and warranty terms are set by the manufacturer for the specific product and should be read on its documentation and certificate.
