Lifespans are general ranges for this climate, not guarantees โ ventilation, installation quality, and storm history all move the number substantially.
Architectural asphalt shingles
The default choice for most Central Texas homes, and for good reason: solid performance, wide color range, and a reasonable cost. Laminated construction makes them noticeably more durable than old 3-tab shingles, which we generally don't recommend here โ the cost difference is small and the performance gap isn't.
Impact-rated (Class 4) shingles
Class 4 is the highest impact rating in the standard test, and it's the upgrade most worth considering in a hail corridor. Two reasons: the shingles genuinely survive impacts that bruise standard shingles, and many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for Class 4 roofs. Over the life of the roof, that discount can offset a meaningful share of the upgrade cost.
Worth doing before you decide: call your insurer and ask what discount they offer for a Class 4 impact-rated roof. The answer varies by carrier and changes the math considerably.
Metal roofing
Standing seam metal is the longest-lasting common option and reflects heat well, which matters in an Austin-area August. It carries the highest upfront cost and requires installers who specifically know metal โ the detailing at penetrations and terminations is where metal roofs succeed or fail. Hail dents metal cosmetically but rarely compromises it functionally, which is a genuine consideration if appearance after a storm matters to you.
What matters as much as the material
Homeowners compare shingle brands and rarely ask about the rest of the system โ which is where most premature failures originate.
- Underlayment โ the water barrier beneath the shingles; synthetic outperforms traditional felt
- Ice and water shield in valleys and around penetrations, the highest-risk leak points
- Flashing โ new metal at chimneys, walls, and vents rather than reusing old flashing
- Ventilation โ inadequate attic ventilation cooks shingles from beneath and shortens their life dramatically in Texas heat
- Drip edge and starter strip โ often omitted on cheap bids, and both matter
- Manufacturer-specified installation โ including correct nailing pattern, which is what keeps the material warranty valid
How to compare two estimates honestly
Two bids with the same bottom line can describe very different work. Ask each contractor: what underlayment, is flashing new or reused, is ventilation being addressed, how many nails per shingle, and what exactly does the warranty cover. The gap between bids usually lives in those answers rather than in the shingle brand.
